How to “practice” copywriting?

Hey everyone – relatively new to the forums however have a question as I read and practice copywriting:

What is the best way to practice copywriting – ie. sell things/services with minimum risk via paid traffic and track conversions? Is the only way to apply to work for someone else via odesk, etc., and trust your ability?
